What is Household Hazardous Waste?

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) includes pesticides, paints, solvents, thinners, batteries, medical waste or material containing asbestos.

Hazardous and electronic waste is strictly prohibited from being landfilled and must be handled separately from trash and recyclables. When disposed of in the trash or down the drain, household hazardous waste threatens the environment and endangers public health.

We provide both drop-off location facilities as well as host mobile hazardous waste drop off events. Additionally, our household hazardous waste team tracks regulations to keep commercial customers in compliance, and can assist in reporting requirements where applicable.

Mobile Hazardous Waste Drop-Off

We offer mobile household hazardous waste collection service for communities where a permanent collection site does not exist or is not nearby. Benefits of mobile collection service are:

Flexibility. Custom days and times allow communities to tailor events to their needs.
Participation. Easy and frequent access attracts customers who may not otherwise travel to a permanent drop-off facility.
Diversion. Safe disposal means that hazardous waste does not end up in our landfills, waterways and environment.

Lake County HAZ-DROP

Through our HAZ-DROP program, household hazardous waste is collected from Lake County residents the third Friday and Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at rotating ends of the lake for convenience to all residents in Lake County. See above for accepted materials.

Please note:

State law prohibits delivery of more than 15 gallons per vehicle
Propane tanks (any compressed cylinders), maximum 5 gallons
Must show identification as a Lake County resident

Most items are accepted free of charge.

Mendocino County HAZ-MOBILE

Household hazardous waste is collected from a variety of inland and coastal Mendocino County areas through our HAZ-MOBILE program, providing easy, convenient and safe hazardous waste disposal. Illegal Dumping in Mendocino County

Illegal dumping is a crime and turns our beautiful communities into unsightly messes.

If you see illegal dump sites in your community, be sure to let us know. If you are able to, take a picture, note the exact location using an address, a mile marker, or GPS coordinates, describe the approximate size of the dump site, and identify the illegally dumped materials. Contact the City of Ukiah at 707-467-5719 to report illegal dump sites.

If you see illegal dumping occurring, please make note of the same information as above, in addition to the color, the make and model, the license plate(s) of the involved vehicle(s), and a description of any persons you observe. Be aware, when you observe illegal dumping taking place, you are witnessing a crime. Make sure to protect your own safety first. Do not attempt to stop the dumping or apprehend anyone involved. Provide the information about the illegal dumping to the County or City code enforcement office or local law enforcement first, then report the dump site to us.

What do you do if somebody has illegally dumped trash onto your property?

Unauthorized dumping on your personal property is a crime. Contact your local law and/or code enforcement with information regarding the dumping on your property. If the responsible party cannot be found, you are responsible for cleanup. You may consider contacting your insurance company to inquire about property cleanup coverage.
