We work hand in hand with our partners to deliver high-quality outcomes through clear communication, efficient processes, and a forward-thinking approach. Every project represents an opportunity to go beyond expectations and reinforce long-term value.California passed AB 341, the Mandatory Commercial Recycling law, in 2011. Under this law, businesses that produce four (4) cubic yards or more of solid waste every week and multi-family complexes with five (5) units or more are required to participate in a recycling program.
AB 1826, California’s Mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling law was passed in 2014. This law requires businesses and multi-family complexes that produce two (2) cubic yards or more of solid waste every week to participate in an organics recycling program. Under this law, businesses and multi-family complexes must recycle or compost yard waste and landscape materials generated on-site.
AB 827 was passed in 2019, amending AB 341 and AB 1826. Under this law, businesses that produce two (2) cubic yards or more of solid waste every week and provide food for purchase and immediate consumption on site must provide recycling containers for customers to use. The recycling containers must be located next to all trash containers, and they must be visible, easily accessible, and clearly labeled.
Full-service restaurants are excluded from providing recycling containers for customer use so long as recycling and organic waste containers are placed next to trash containers for employee use.
California passed SB 1383, also known as Mandatory Commercial and Residential Organics Recycling, in 2016. Under this law, all residents, businesses, and multi-family complexes* are required to participate in an organics recycling program in which organic materials such as food waste, food soiled paper, and yard waste are separated from trash.
Businesses and multi-family complexes are also required to provide recycling and organic waste collection containers at all trash locations; educate employees, contractors, tenants, and customers about proper sorting; and inspect trash, recycling, and organic waste containers to make sure items are sorted correctly.
Additionally, commercial edible food generators are required to participate in a food recovery program.
*If your community is exempt from SB 1383, compliance with AB 341 and AB 1826 is still required.
The State legislature has established a 25% recycling rate goal.
