California Organics Mandate
California Senate Bill (SB) 1383 requires all multifamily complexes and businesses to separate food waste, food-soiled paper, and green waste from garbage. They must also provide organic waste collection containers, educate residents, employees, contractors, tenants, and customers about properly separating food waste and food-soiled paper, and inspect the garbage, recycling, and organic waste containers to make sure materials are properly separated. This can be accomplished by subscribing to organic waste collection service, self-hauling organic waste to a composting or processing facility, or composting on site.
At Redwood Waste Solutions, we are committed to ensuring your compliance with SB 1383. Please contact us at 707-234-6400 for a free onsite waste assessment or to schedule service.
Commercial Edible Food Generators
Under SB 1383, businesses are required to participate in food recovery programs if they are wholesale food vendors, food service providers, grocery stores of 10,000 sq. ft. or more, supermarkets, or food distributors. Food recovery programs enable businesses with excess edible food to donate it to organizations that use the excess food to feed people.
We are available to provide your business with resources necessary to establish a local food recovery program. Contact us at 707-234-6400 or click here to download our flier for more information.
Edible Food Recovery Mandate
In order to reduce food waste and feed people in need, SB 1383 requires edible food be diverted from landfilling. By 2025, California aims to recover 20% of edible food through food recovery programs. Food recovery programs enable businesses with excess edible food to donate it to organizations that use the excess food to feed people.
Under SB 1383, food generators are required to establish written agreements and/or contracts with food recovery organizations to donate the maximum amount of edible food possible. Additionally, food generators are required to keep records of food donations and submit written reports to Mendocino County annually via the Annual Food Recovery Report for Edible Food Generators form.
