Position Summary:
Under general supervision, performs skilled repair and maintenance on medium to heavy diesel trucks and medium to heavy equipment; inspects, diagnoses and repairs engines; repairs heavy construction equipment and hydraulic systems and performs related duties as required,
Responsibilities:
Services medium to heavy equipment in accordance with maintenance schedule; inspects, diagnosis, and repairs mechanical, electrical, and other defects on automotive vehicles, including, but not limited adjusting brakes, tire replacement, steering gears, starters, generators, universal joints, and minor body repair; discusses service and repair problems with operator and supervisor; maintains records of repairs made, work orders, and time worked; performs minor emergency repairs in the field; steam-cleans engines and chassis; performs minor arc and acetylene welding.
Qualifications:
- Modern methods, equipment, materials, and tools used in repairing medium and heavy equipment and trucks, and other gas-powered equipment.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems using electronic diagnostic equipment and determine appropriate installation, service, and maintenance needs.
- Follow written and oral instructions; use the equipment, materials, and tools required in the maintenance and repair of motorized equipment.
Additional Qualifications:
Licenses- Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License is required at the time of appointment. Appointees may be required to obtain special licenses (i.e. smog, Class B Driver’s License) as necessary.
Supplemental Information:
Incumbents in this classification may be exposed to adverse conditions such as inclement weather, dust, loud noise, heat, and wind. Work in this classification may involve exposure to: chemicals; moving machinery, vehicles, and equipment; fumes; gases; petroleum products; fire and electrical hazards; and confined spaces. The use of appropriate safety clothing and equipment is required. Some positions in this class series may require possession of a valid California Class B Driver’s License. Some positions in this class series may require possession of hazardous materials and tank vehicle endorsements in addition to a valid California Class B Driver’s License. Appointees to those positions requiring a Class B license will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs prior to beginning work; once on the job, incumbents will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return- to-duty, and follow-up basis.
Compensation:
Compensation is based on experience.
