Service Area

Transfer Station Operations are available to the public of inland Mendocino County.

The Transfer Station, located at 3151 Taylor Drive in Ukiah, is open Monday through Saturday,
8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and can be reached by phone at (707) 234-6400.

Solid Waste Operations

  • Municipal Solid Waste delivered to the Transfer Station from inland Mendocino County is consolidated, loaded and shipped to Northern California landfills.
  • Station is open to the public (self-haulers) and commercial haulers.
  • Solid waste on the tipping floor is sorted to the maximum extent feasible to extract recyclables from the waste stream and increase diversion from landfilling. Typical materials sorted include cardboard, paper, glass, metals, plastic, plastic PVC irrigation tubing, concrete, porcelain, insulated wire and mattresses.
  • Salvaged materials are offered for sale at the Salvage Shop. See below for more information.

Recyclable Drop-Off

  • The Transfer Station accepts the following recyclables without charge:
    • Scrap Metal
    • Consumer Electronics (televisions, computers, monitors, stereos, VCRs, cell phones, etc.)
    • Household batteries
    • Automobile batteries
    • Motor oil and filters
    • Newspaper, cardboard, office paper, food and beverage glass, steel cans, and plastic food, beverage containers, clean film plastic such as grocery bags, plastic wrap and shrink wrap.
    • Rigid plastic containers such as 5 gallon buckets, plastic storage containers, resin patio chairs and laundry baskets
  • The Transfer Station accepts the following recyclables for a fee:
    • Appliances such as washers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, water heaters, air conditioners, dishwashers and microwaves

Recyclable Buy-Back

The Transfer Station operates a state-certified buy-back where customers can redeem containers which have California Redemption Value (CRV).

Material brought for redemption must be segregated by product type and separated from other materials.

The Buy-Back Center is open Monday - Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Scrap Metal Buy-Back

The Scrap Metal Buy-Back Center formerly located at the Transfer Station has moved down the road to 3515 Taylor Drive. Metals purchased include aluminum, copper, brass, radiators, insulated and clean wire, stainless steel, lead and similar materials. Now also buying batteries. The facility operates in compliance with scrap metal regulations of the State of California. Customers need to provide proper identification before purchases can be made. Hours are Monday Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Scrap metal can still be dropped off at the Ukiah Transfer Station during regular transfer station business hours for recycling at no charge.

Compost and Landscape Materials Available

Compost is available in bulk or in bags at 3151 Taylor Drive, Ukiah, during regular business hours. Our compost is made from recycled municipal green waste. We also sell a variety of recycled landscape materials at competitive prices. Delivery is available for compost and landscape materials. Acceptable payment methods include cash, debit card, or credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover). Call (707) 234-6400 for delivery information.

Hours of Operation

The Transfer Station and Drop-off: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Buy-Back: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

The Transfer Station is closed on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.


All payments for depositing solid waste, construction and demolition waste, drop-off of certain appliances or the purchase of compost may be made by cash, debit card or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover).

Hazardous & Electronic Waste

Hazardous and electronic waste is strictly prohibited from being landfilled, and must be handled separately from trash and recyclables. This includes all paints, thinners, pesticides, motor oil, fluorescent tubes and electronics such as televisions, monitors, and VCRs.

We accept the following hazardous waste and e-waste free of charge in designated areas at our transfer station:

  • Electronics (TVs, computers, stereo equipment, cell phones, etc.)
  • Household and automotive batteries
  • Motor oil and oil filters
  • Antifreeze
  • Fluorescent bulbs
  • Sharps (Syringes and hypodermic needles must be properly packaged and sealed in an approved, puncture-proof container to be accepted)
